about

Over the last two years, the Compton-born artist Channel Tres had made a name for himself combining the rhythms and spirit of classic house and techno with the snarl of West Coast rap. His live dance parties had become must-go social events around the world, and his first Coachella appearance was but a month away – then the pandemic happened. Then a summer of racial injustice and protests, then –

It's not worth listing the rest. You've endured this dumpster fire of a year, and so did Channel. I Can't Go Outside is his journal of sorts, the sound of a talented young black man trying to make sense of everything that's happened, digging himself out of his own skull under lockdown orders in Los Angeles.

Channel tried to make music every day in his bedroom – usually by himself, first thought best thought, just letting it all out. The DIY approach lends his mixtape an intimacy and tenderness we haven't heard from Channel thus far. Some tracks ("I Can't Go Outside") recall old Arthur Russell home demos, the way you could hear Russell figuring out the song as he went along. On others Channel wallows in nostalgia – cruising the streets of Compton in his first car ("2000 Chevy Malibu"), or working his first job at a roller rink ("Skate Depot"), with instrumentals that aim to capture that sense of freedom and excitement.

At the core of I Can't Go Outside is "Fuego" – a searingly honest look at himself and the wild emotional fluctuations of being a black American artist. Over a Charlie Mingus-inspired instrumental, Channel lays it out plainly: One moment you feel like a god, the next you feel like a fraud, over and over again. This was the first song Channel wrote in quarantine but the last to be finished, but for good reason: Tyler the Creator took a liking to an early mix, and asked Channel if he could add a verse. One moment you feel like a god…

Making music with artists he admired is how Channel got through this year. His collaborations with Disclosure, SG Lewis, Robyn, James Blake, Emotional Oranges, Tinashe, and more were among this year's most well-regarded in the dance space – even if dancing was confined to our kitchens for the time being. While at home, Channel also launched his own label, called Art For Their Good, soundtracked two Apple commercials and countless TV and video games, and hosted the Black Lives Matter election night event alongside founder Patrisse Cullors.

I Can't Go Outside is out now on Art For Their Good.

about

Channel Tres Los Angeles, California

Channel Tres grew up in the Compton neighborhood of Los Angeles. His voice is effortlessly deep, as if Barry White didn't realize he was Barry White. 'Controller' is Channel's debut single, out 4/17 on Godmode (Yaeji, Shamir). It's classic Detroit House, reimagined with the surly attitude of West Coast rap. ... more
